Manhattan Beach Family Photographer | Pier Session

As a South Bay family photographer, I photograph a lot of sessions at the pier, and it’s easily one of my favorite locations in Manhattan Beach, CA! If you’re looking for a spot to have your Manhattan Beach Family photos done, the Manhattan Beach Pier is my top choice! Between the view of the ocean, soft light, and space for kids to run around, it’s the perfect spot for fun, natural family photos.

This session at the Manhattan Beach Pier was a good example of how beautiful and easy beach sessions can feel. We started the session in the evening, which gave us the perfect light, something I always recommend for beach sessions. The result was a mix of candid moments, playful movement, and those in-between moments that make photos feel like you.

One of the things I love most about photographing families at the Manhattan Beach Pier is how naturally everything unfolds. There’s space for kids to move, the ocean keeps everything feeling calm, and nothing feels overly posed.

During this session, we leaned into that! We let the moments happen instead of forcing them. Some of my favorite images always come from those in-between seconds, when everyone relaxes and just enjoys being together.

My approach to family photography is all about capturing connection. I’ll guide you throughout your session, but I also leave space for real moments to unfold – the laughs, the chaos, the quiet in-between moments.

Especially at the beach, I want your session to feel easy and natural. No stiff posing, no pressure; just documenting your family as you are.

A couple extra things to keep in mind:

Timing: Morning sessions are quieter and easier with young kid but sunset gives you that golden glow.

Expect some movement: The beach is perfect for candid, playful moments. Don’t be afraid of the wind! If it is a concern, I recommend bringing a brush for in between photos.

Keep outfits simple: Neutrals and soft tones photograph beautifully against the ocean!

If you would like to book family photos in Manhattan Beach, here are a few helpful tips:

Spring and Fall tend to have the best weather, softer light and beautiful sunsets.

If you want to avoid crowds, I recommend a Winter, Spring or Fall session.

There is metered parking right in front of the pier & restrooms to the right of the pier.

If you would like a beach session in the summer, I recommend a morning session. Here is an example of a morning Manhattan Beach Pier session I photographed
