How to Prepare Your Toddler for Family Photos: A South Bay Mom’s Guide to a Stress-Free Session
If you’ve ever found yourself wondering, “What if my toddler refuses to smile?” or “What if they have a meltdown halfway through our family photoshoot?” – take a deep breath, you’re not alone.
As a family photographer serving Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, and the rest of the South Bay, I’ve worked with dozens of toddlers, and I can tell you one thing with confidence: toddlers are the ones in control! We can work around your toddler’s natural behaviors to truly personalize your photos!
Most of my favorite images have come from moments that weren’t planned at all – a spontaneous giggle, a sandy hug, or a tiny hand reaching for mom or dad. Those are the memories you’ll treasure years from now, and are the ones that I strive to capture!
The secret isn’t having a perfectly behaved child. Letting your child be themselves and roam free will lead to a session that you and your family will enjoy and treasure for years to come.
1. Talk About the Session Like It’s an Adventure
One of the easiest ways to prepare your toddler is by making the experience sound exciting – not stressful.
Instead of saying, “We’re going to take family pictures,” you could try saying:
- “We’re going to play at the beach!”
- “We’re going on a little adventure together.”
- “We’re going to run, play, and watch the waves.”
Toddlers don’t understand the importance of holiday cards or updating family portraits, but they do understand how to have fun. Framing your session as an exciting outing helps create a positive narrative before you even arrive.
2. Choose a Time That Works for Your Child
Every toddler has a window when they’re happiest. For some, it’s after their afternoon nap, or perhaps after breakfast.
Whenever possible, schedule your session around that window.
While golden hour and the sunset creates beautiful lighting along the beaches in Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach, a well rested, happy toddler will almost always produce better photographs than an overtired child during the “perfect” lighting conditions.
If you’re working with an experienced photographer, they will help you find the best balance between beautiful light and your family’s schedule.
3. Feed Everyone Before You Leave
Hungry toddlers rarely enjoy being photographed.
Plan a meal or snack before your session, and bring water along. If you need snacks during the shoot, choose something simple that won’t stain clothing or their faces. Crackers or dry cereal are usually great choices, while chocolate or fruit pouches are best saved for afterward.
Make sure you and your partner eat something as well! Parents often forget to eat, and I promise the session will be much more enjoyable for everyone after a good meal!
4. Pack a Small “Just in Case” Bag
A little preparation can make a huge difference.
Consider bringing:
- A favorite stuffed animal
- Water bottles
- Baby wipes
- A backup outfit for your toddler
- A neutral blanket
- A few simple, non-messy snacks
If your child has a comfort item they truly love, bring it along. Sometimes it stays tucked away in your bag, and sometimes it becomes part of the sweetest photographs of the day. If they have multiple favorite toys, try to pick one that matches the vibe and color palette of your outfits!
5. Let Go of the Idea of Perfect
This might be the most important advice I can give.
The best family photos rarely happen when everyone is looking perfectly at the camera;
they’re created during the in between moments.
Your toddler running toward the ocean.
Dad swinging them through the air.
Mom wiping sandy hands off little cheeks.
A spontaneous hug.
These genuine interactions tell your family’s story far better than stiff poses ever could.
As your photographer, I’m looking for the true essence that is unique to your family – not perfection.
6. Dress for Comfort
Beach sessions are meant to be relaxed, and your clothing choice should reflect that.
Choose soft, breathable fabrics that allow everyone to move comfortably. Neutral colors photograph beautifully against the sand and ocean, while coordinating outfits (rather than matching exactly) create a timeless look.
Avoid clothing that’s itchy, stiff, or requires constant adjusting. If your toddler isn’t comfortable, they’ll let everyone know.
7. Skip the “Say Cheese”
Parents naturally want to encourage smiles, but asking a toddler to “smile!” over and over usually has the opposite effect.
Instead, focus on interacting with them as you normally would!
Tickle them.
Whisper something silly.
Play peekaboo.
Ask them where they think the seagulls are flying.
Sing their favorite song.
Real laughter is impossible to fake, and those authentic expressions create photographs beaming with personality.
8. Trust Your Photographer
One of the biggest gifts you can give yourself during your family session is permission to relax.
You don’t have to constantly remind your child to smile or sit still.
Experienced family photographers know how to connect with toddlers. We use games, movement, curiosity, and patience to capture genuine moments while your family simply enjoys being together.
Some of the best images happen when parents stop worrying about the camera and focus on loving on their little ones.
What If My Toddler Has a Meltdown?
Let’s normalize something.
It happens.
Sometimes toddlers get overwhelmed. Sometimes they get tired. Sometimes they decide today is the day they don’t want to cooperate.
That’s okay.
We’ll take a break.
We’ll walk along the shoreline.
We’ll snuggle.
We’ll let them reset.
I’ve found that some of the most heartfelt photographs happen just after those quiet moments, when your child feels safe and comforted in your arms.
Those aren’t failed sessions. It’s real life, and I love capturing the beauty in the “imperfection”.
A Few Beach Cities Tips
If we’re meeting at one of our beautiful South Bay beaches, here are a few tips:
- Arrive about 15 – 20 minutes early so parking doesn’t feel rushed.
- Bring a light sweater for everyone after sunset, even during summer.
- Expect a little wind – it often adds beautiful movement to dresses and hair.
- Let your children explore safely. The beach is meant to be enjoyed.
- Whether we’re photographing your family in Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, or another favorite South Bay location, my goal is always the same: to create an experience that’s joyful, relaxed, and true to your family.
Remember What These Photos Are Really About
Years from now, your children won’t remember whether they smiled perfectly on command.
They’ll remember holding your hand.
Running barefoot through the sand.
Laughing while you chased them down the beach.
And every time you look back at your family photographs, you’ll remember those moments too.
The most meaningful family photos aren’t perfect.
They’re honest.
They’re full of movement, love, and connection.
That’s exactly what I hope to capture for every family I photograph.
If you’re looking for a relaxed family photography experience in Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, or anywhere in the South Bay, I’d love to help you preserve this season of life just as it is. Together, we’ll create images that feel natural, joyful, and uniquely yours – without the pressure of perfection.
